Reuters Videopoint
Challenge
To create a fast responsive web application to allow television producers to view and search scripts detailing the contents of video segments produced by Reuters television to replace an existing earlier platform.
The new platform needed to offer extremely high levels of reliability and performance as it is an essential tool to allow Reuters television clients to plan their news schedules.
Approach
We built a bespoke Java server application using the Google Web toolkit (GWT) running under Apache, Tomcat and a MySQL database. We used Maven to provide our build environment and Hudson to carry out unit testing. Lucene was used to provide the text search capability.
The application used a back-end feed handler which interrogated an XML based web service provided by Reuters to ingest the scripts in realitme and inserted them into the database.
For hosting we built out a high availability cluster of servers configured such that the failure of any server within the cluster would not impact the delivery of the service.
Result
The application has proved to be very reliable and scalable and offers Reuters customers a powerful but easy to use application for managing Reuters television content.
